Dixit, The Most Original Board Game. Review, Rules, and Opinion.

Without any doubt, Dixit is one of the most entertaining and original board game available on the market.

I remember the first time I played it, just how I loved the dreamlike illustrations in all their cards. The truth is, that this game is one of the most original and funny ones I’ve ever seen, it will also test your brain in order to imagine alternative universes based on your cards.

Let yourself be carried away by your creativity and surprise your opponents to be the winner of the game.

But before you start to play, you’ll need to do how to do so!

What is Dixit?

Dixit is a board game created by Jean-Louis Roubira back in 2008. However, this game started to gain fame especially in the decade of the 2010s, when Dixit started to win hundreds of awards.

The main objective of the game is to guess a card using a phrase, a song title, a story or simply the first thing that comes to mind.

But be careful, you can’t be too descriptive or too obvious, because then you’ll lose the round.

That’s why I feel it as my duty to explain how to play Dixit.

How to play Dixit? Instructions and rules

After buying Dixit you will find in its box the next list:

• 1 board game to annotate the points accumulated in each round.
• 84 cards.
• 36 voting chips of 6 different colors numbered from 1 to 6.
• 6 wooden rabbits that each player chooses and places in the 0 positions of the scoring scale.

After placing everything on the board, these 84 cards are shuffled, 6 are dealt to each player and then the game begins.

Then, every player takes a rabbit of one color and places it in the starting square (the 0 one).

How to deal out the Dixit voting chips?

• For 4 players, each one takes 4 voting chips.
• For 5 players, each one takes 5 voting chips.
• For 6 players, each one takes 6 voting chips.

Note that you cannot show the cards to anyone, so be careful that someone else may see them!

What are the roles in Dixit? The Storyteller.

This player, also sometimes referred to as the narrator, will be the one who gives sense to the cards of the game in his turn. The storyteller will be in charge of the turn.

To play, he will look at his 6 cards in hand, and pick one, then, he has to create a phrase, a sound, a song, or the first thing that comes to his mind that defines the card of his choice.

Let’s imagine for example that the storyteller sees this card and says: ¨The Little Prince¨

The storyteller, after announcing his sentence, will place the card face down on the table.

At this point, the rest of the players should look for a card in their hand that corresponds as closely as possible to the phrase said by the storyteller.

For example, a player could use this card as a very good visual example of what ¨The Little Prince¨ represents (for those who haven’t read it yet… what are you waiting for?)

All players would look for a card in their hand that matches ¨The Little Prince’¨ and place it facing down the table.

All players’ cards are shuffled, and they are revealed face up.

Then, at this point, the game will begin.

What is the purpose of Dixit?

The purpose of the game is very simple, and that is that if you are the storyteller, you must get the vast majority of people to vote your card. But watch out! If everyone hits your card, you will lose cause it will be too obvious (that’s the trick of this game).

For example: if instead of saying the little prince on the card above, you said something like ¨boy with a candle on a light bulb¨, I’m sure everyone would spot you, so you can’t be that obvious.

On the other hand, if you are not the storyteller, your main goal is to find the storyteller’s card.

To do that, you’ll use the ability to vote.

The storyteller will never be able to vote during his turn (logically, he is the person who chose the card).

Later, with all the matching cards with the word ¨The Little Prince” discovered, all players will vote which card they think is the storyteller’s card.

Be careful, if you vote your own card it will be cheating!

How to Score in Dixit? Voting System and Scores.

The voting system in Dixit is pretty simple and it’s made up of 3 parts.

• If all players match the storyteller’s card, or if no player matches it, all players except the storyteller earn 2 points. Therefore, the storyteller can never be too obvious or too disperse.
• In any other case, both the storyteller and the players who got it right get 3 points.
• All players, except the storyteller, earn 1 point for each vote their card receives.

Therefore, to imagine a perfect round for the storyteller, at least one player must vote for his card. The more players who vote for your card, the worse it gets, as they too will receive 3 points.

However, if as a storyteller your card is not voted, you will receive 0 points.

Once you have scored your points for the round, you will have to move your rabbit up the score scale a number of spaces equal to the points you have scored.
However, the points can also be written down in a notebook or on the mobile, or simply to play in a friendly way without writing down the points.

At the end of the turn, each player will draw a new card from the deck. The player to the left of the storyteller will be the next to play and will become the new storyteller.

Dixit is without any doubt one of the best board games that exist so far.

The cards are gorgeously illustrated, reminiscent of dreams and other worlds, and will have little to do with any other game.

It is, in fact, the degree of complexity and beauty of its cards that has made Dixit one of the most critically acclaimed games.

On the other hand, the games assured a great deal of fun, as you get to see how each of the players think, and you get to measure how creative they are.

It’s not uncommon to see people who are very obvious, and other people who are so far-fetched that no one can get their cards right.

So, the best thing you can do is buy your Dixit right now, or if you already have one of the decks, buy a new one, as there are hundreds of different decks, and take advantage of it to have a very nice and fun time among your loved ones.
